Can anyone suggest me best email marketing for Shopify? Here is the actual answer.

A thread on the Shopify Community forum asked this exact question and got the same recycled list everyone always posts: Klaviyo retention agency, Omnisend retention services, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, in that order, with no reasoning attached. Nobody said which one to actually use, or why the others would cost you money.
Short answer: If your Shopify store does between $500K and $5M a year, use Klaviyo. Full stop. Omnisend is a defensible second choice if your team is small and you cannot staff segmentation properly. Mailchimp and ActiveCampaign are not built for ecommerce lifecycle logic and you will hit their limits within six months.
Why the generic lists get it wrong
The tools are ranked by affiliate commission, not ecommerce fit
Every “top email tools” post ranks Mailchimp near the top because its affiliate payout is generous and its brand recognition is high. Mailchimp’s ecommerce data sync with Shopify has been unreliable since they were removed from the Shopify App Store in 2019. The re-integration that came later still does not pass order-level event data as cleanly as Klaviyo’s native Shopify web pixel does. We see this in roughly a third of the accounts we audit: operators running Mailchimp who believe they have abandoned cart flows running, but the trigger is firing on incomplete data and recovering a fraction of what it should.
ActiveCampaign’s segmentation model is built for B2B SaaS, not repeat-purchase DTC
ActiveCampaign is excellent at lead scoring and CRM-style pipeline logic. That is not what a Shopify store needs. You need a platform that understands Placed Order, Started Checkout, Viewed Product, and Fulfilled Order as first-class events, not custom fields you have to map yourself. Klaviyo ingests all four natively from the Shopify web pixel with zero configuration. ActiveCampaign requires a third-party connector and the event fidelity degrades under high order volume.
Omnisend’s pricing model punishes growth differently than people expect
Omnisend is genuinely good for stores under $1M that want email and SMS in one interface without a separate Attentive or Postscript contract. The edge case most articles skip: Omnisend’s SMS sending in the US routes through shared short codes by default on standard plans. That means your SMS deliverability is tied to the behavior of thousands of other senders. Klaviyo defaults to 10-digit long codes (10DLC), which carry better deliverability and are easier to register under current TCPA and carrier requirements as of 2026.
How to actually pick and set it up
- Install Klaviyo from the Shopify App Store and connect your store. Go to your Shopify Admin, then Apps, then search Klaviyo. After install, Klaviyo will prompt you through the integration wizard. Allow the Shopify web pixel to fire. This single step gives Klaviyo access to Started Checkout, Placed Order, Viewed Product, and Fulfilled Order events automatically.
- Verify event data is flowing before you build a single flow. In Klaviyo, go to Analytics > Metrics. You should see Placed Order and Started Checkout appearing within 24 hours of your first post-install orders. If you do not see them, go to Integrations > Shopify > your store name > check that “Sync Shopify events” is toggled on.
- Turn off Smart Sending on your first three flows. In Klaviyo, go to Flows > [your flow, e.g. Abandoned Checkout] > click into the email > Delivery options > Smart Sending > toggle it OFF. Smart Sending suppresses emails to people who received any Klaviyo email in the last 16 hours by default. On high-volume days it will silently kill your abandoned cart recovery. Turn it off for transactional-adjacent flows, leave it on for campaigns.
- Build your Abandoned Checkout flow first, not a welcome series. Your welcome series earns you nothing until you have traffic. Your Abandoned Checkout flow recovers revenue that is already in your pipeline. Trigger: Started Checkout. Filter: Has not placed an order since starting checkout. Delay: 1 hour for email one, 24 hours for email two, 72 hours for email three with a discount. In Klaviyo: Flows > Create Flow > Abandoned Checkout (pre-built template) > edit delays in the timeline sidebar.
- Set up your suppression list before your first campaign send. In Klaviyo, go to Lists & Segments > Suppression List. Add anyone who has not opened or clicked in 180 days and has received more than five campaigns. Sending to cold contacts without this step tanks your domain reputation inside 60 days and deliverability problems take 90 to 180 days to reverse fully.
- If you choose Omnisend instead, replicate steps 3 through 5 under Automation > Workflows > [workflow name] > edit each message > Advanced settings > Send window. The setting name in Omnisend is Send Window, not Smart Sending, but the logic is identical.
Platform comparison at a glance
| Platform | Best fit revenue range | Shopify event fidelity | SMS on same platform | Starting price (up to 1,000 contacts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo | $300K to $50M+ | Native web pixel, all events | Yes, 10DLC by default | $45/month (email + SMS) |
| Omnisend | $100K to $2M | Good, minor event lag under load | Yes, shared short code on base plan | $16/month (email only) |
| Brevo retention services | Under $500K, high email volume, low list size | Connector required, limited events | Yes, but US SMS is limited | $9/month (email only) |
| Mailchimp | Pre-revenue or hobby stores | Partial, no native web pixel | No | $13/month |
| ActiveCampaign | B2B or SaaS, not DTC | Connector required, poor order event mapping | No native SMS | $19/month |
Questions operators actually ask about this
Why does this happen in the first place?
Most “suggest best email” threads get generic answers because the people answering are not running Shopify stores at scale. They are copying content they have seen elsewhere or recommending what they personally tried at low volume. The platforms that perform well for a $50K store and a $2M store are not the same platforms, and no list post accounts for that gap.
How do you fix things once you have already picked the wrong tool?
Migration is painful but not catastrophic. Export your full list from your current platform as a CSV including subscription date and last engagement date. Import into Klaviyo under Lists & Segments > Import contacts, then tag them with their source. Do not migrate inactive contacts. Anyone who has not engaged in 180 days should be suppressed immediately on import, not re-engaged with a campaign on day one.
How long should it take to see a change?
Your Abandoned Checkout flow should show recovered revenue within the first 72 hours of going live, assuming you have traffic. Deliverability improvements after a bad sending history take 60 to 90 days to fully register in inbox placement rates. Platform migrations typically stabilize open and click metrics within 30 days if your suppression hygiene was clean going in.
What should you check before anything else?
Go to Klaviyo Analytics > Metrics and confirm that Placed Order and Started Checkout are both firing. Then go to Flows and check that your Abandoned Checkout flow is set to Live, not Draft. We see accounts where the flow was built correctly but left in Draft for months. Recoverable revenue sitting at zero.
Pick Klaviyo, connect your Shopify web pixel, and fix your Abandoned Checkout flow before you touch anything else. Every other decision can wait a week.
